Another week swooshes by

at a million miles per hour. This week we are in week three of having no landline. We also had two power cuts this week. Oh, and I cant get mobile phone coverage on my house so we are effectively cut of from contact. So no power and no phone.. Do we live in the outback, maybe the wilds of Mongolia. Nope, we live near Winchester, the ancient capital of Britain where there has been a city for over 1000 years, and still we have no bloody electricity. So i think I missed out on any blogs beginning with a letter early in the alphabet. But now I have found Cathy again too. I don't know who else is missing though as Google reader has gone :( Fahed is still away visiting family so I am planning an active weekend.. Not one of fun though! He hates the smell of paint and it makes him rather ill so I am going to get all of my odd and ends of painting finished (hopefully). Also some garden work, especially the front (looks awful). Checking out the bike shop, some grocery shopping. All fun, fun, fun (well, sort of) I seem to be having a happy attack! And what is also weird is that this posting has paragraophs in Blogger but they disappear when I post, whic makes it look very much like I am writing in a terrific hurry, which I am not!

The Old Reader - make sure you do it right!

So I moved all my blog subscriptions to a new reader, the old reader, which I like very much. After a few days i thought that its funny that I haven't had an update from Moyra lately, then i got an update via Facebook and realised that subscription had dropped off. The this evening I noticed Daizy was missing. Then Froogs was gone... I have obviously re-added everyone but not sure who else I have lost. If you change reader using export import functionality then do be careful you don't ditch all of your favourites, like I did.

Works well under pressure

My mending basket had got too full to actually carry around up until yesterday. Finally I could avoid no more. There were two pairs of Fahed's trousers to be hemmed & two pairs of jiggers to be mended/hemmed. All had to be done ready for packing.
All went well so I also fixed the sleeves on a silky top which we weird and puffy (no more!).  Then I mended two pairs of my own jeans which were in the basket so long I had actually forgotten I had them. Next a pair of Ahdel work trousers. And nothing went wrong, as it so often does, withy lack of about combined with my mums ancient sewing machine.
Just started to pin the arms on a dress (mail order and looked weird without sleeves- somehow I found matching fabric, yaay) and we ran out of time. I really left it to the very last moment. Silly but I whipped the ought it and nothing went wrong so I guess it suits me to work under some time constraints.

And when we get back dropping Fahed at the airport I am going to do those sleeves even though I don't need the dress until December :)

Good alternative for Google Reader

I have been looking for a good alternative for google reader for a couple of months since finding out my perfect reader was being ditched (sob) Most of the possible alternatives are magazine style, which is fine if you want a paper you pick up when you want it. Not at all what I want. I like a readable list which lets me know where I am & what i have read and what not. I have been trying out Feedly for the last few weeks. Its fine but I get confused about rad and unread and end up losing the plot. Today I discovered The Old Reader. It is exactly what I wanted, a old style google reader. Suits me, so hopefully it stays around. thoroughly recommended.

2 1/2 weeks

Fahed is off to visit his family tomorrow/ 2.5 weeks of just me and the boys (who are men, not boys, so I am safely home alone). As I have mentioned before Fahed is a little bit in the aspergers area, so change is not appreciated. Before & after his holiday he is very unsettled anyway so I also use his time away to make any major changes I want to around the house. Hey, he is going to be grizzly anyway so I might as well use it. This time his sofa is going. It is old and tired. We have two sofas in the conservatory so one of those is coming in to the sitting room. Then we re-arrange that rest of that room to make it better for Ahdel and his music stuff (guitars, amps and all sorts are everywhere), but I also get a quiet reading area. The new sofa will be better for Fahed as it is more comfortable and better quality but all the same, it is change. He does know about this but I wont be reminding him again as it might get veto'd in the tense days before travel. I have also made myself a massive task list to complete during this time, mostly painting, varnishing and a bit more de-cluttering. I like to be kept busy but am also setting aside some creative time. I rather like the freedom of 2.5 weeks without having to worry about change, timings and all the rest but I am happy to get back to normal at the end of it. Cant add photos again - sigh

Food Waste Friday

This is new to me. I am not a waster by nature it helps to be accountable.

This week is my first week and hopefully my worse ever week as I chose to have a bit of a sort out in the pantry, fridge and freezer. Oh, the guilt.

4 freshly frozen sardines - I bought a load and ate half.. They are too small to gut and I cant be happy with the idea of eating them un-gutted

4 instant 'burger in a bun' things which I bought for my son ahead of our holiday - one son can cook but the other one would starve in front of an open fridge. These were too awful even for him so after three months I have accepted they need to go.

2 frozen gluten free crumpets - they were horrid and Fahed would prefer no crumpets to them crumpets..

2 manky bananas - one frozen and one fresh. Couldn't work out how to peel the frozen one and the fresh one just got missed.

I am really happy with how much progress I am making. Maybe I should do this every month.

Friday 14 June 2013

I did it!

Chopped up three credit cards - we have no emergency access to debt now. Nervous, moi?  No, well yes, not much, it will be fine. It felt kind of liberating. Kind of.

Now kill of all debt and rebuild emergency fund.
I am also stashing away savings so that we can help my dear brother in law start a new business after the war in Syria. It gives Fahed something positive to focus on and the family will need all the help that they can get when it over (it will be over at some point, won't it?).
Last thing - savings fund for Crete house. Next year a big visit with lots of expense, like starting to rebuild the old house. We never run out of things to fix but its all good.

Positive, positive, positive, thats how it works.

Wednesday 12 June 2013

Getting serious

I have made a plan (snowball spreadsheet stylee) to clear up the last of our debt. We borrowed some non mortgage debt to pay the last stage payment on the house in Crete, due to a few changes in exchange rate.  So to kick off the next stage in our financial evolution I am chopping up my credit cards. I have three but in about five minutes I will have none. Chop and go.

AH WHOOPS

My 20 ways in 20 days should have been things to make me happy rather than concentrating on money saving efficiency. Never mind, I am sure that anything which makes me more financially efficient will also make me happy, if only by leaving me more cash to do my fun things with. So as I ahve wandered from the path I might just make up my own plan and have 30 things in 30 days. That is if I can think of 30 things and remember to do it!

  1. Learn to ebay more successfully
  2. Make an effort to actually put into practice what I have learned (5 items a week minimum until the house is empty!)
  3. Attend as much of Ahdel's bands gig as possible
  4. Make an effort to socialise with a friend at least once a week, doesnt need to be 'out' but does need to be fun
